Fifth Day of Blogmas: Five Favorite Songs

Welcome to the Fifth Day of Blogmas!

I’m so excited to share with you five of my favorite songs.

I love music, and I’m constantly discovering new artists and songs, so there are many songs that could be on this short list, but for now I’ll give you some of my more recent obsessions. I know only one of them is a Christmas song but I don’t really don’t seasonally discriminate with music. Also, these are in no particular order.

1) El Tango De Roxanne – Moulin Rouge

Oddly enough, I’ve never seen Moulin Rouge, but I’m in love with this song. Ewan McGregor is one of those actors who just surprises you with his broad talent. He may not have a big voice, but it’s definitely beautifully haunting on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. I had this song on repeat for a few days and I have no regrets.

2) Light Up My Room – The Barenaked Ladies

I distinctly remember hearing “One Week” all the time when I was younger, but I never knew who the artist was and went many years oblivious to how amazing the whole STUNT album is. I’ve listened to the whole album all the way through at least once a day for the past few weeks and, while every song is amazing in its own way, “Light up my room” remains my favorite.

3) I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day – Burl Ives

This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs and has been since I was very little. It’s based on the poem, “Christmas Bells” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and there are a few more verses in the poem than the song. Without fail, Burl Ives, and this song in particular, always puts me in the Christmas mood, so I highly recommend giving it a listen!

4) Love is Blindness – Jack White

If you’ve ever watched “Peaky Blinders” you’ll know why a photo of Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby is used for the video above. This song is perfect for the show, though I don’t remember if it has ever actually been used in an episode. Somehow this song was put into one of my playlists twice in a row, and I’m not even mad. I have never listened to much of The White Stripes, or Jack White, but this song alone is enough to make me think I’d actually really like their music.

5) The Lady is Risen – Johnny Flynn

I don’t have a ton to say about this song, just that I’m in love with it and definitely had it on repeat for a long time. Johnny Flynn is another artist I’ve recently discovered, and so far everything I’ve heard of his I love. If you’re looking for a new obsession, I recommend Johnny Flynn’s music.

There you have it! Keep in mind that these are only five of my music obsessions, and I listen to a lot of music, so this list could be much much longer.

Merry Christmas, and Happy Listening!

-Elaine
